Grace Alice LORD/FATCHEN/BEATTIE

Hi Everyone
    I am at the moment trying to find any relevant details of the above (death in particular).  I have looked on the NZ BDM and could not find her under BEATTIE.

Firstly Grace Alice LORD was born in Tasmania 1879 and married Percy Thomas FATCHEN in 1899 in Tasmania (they have also been listed with surname THOMAS).

Graces parents are WILLIAM HENRY LORD and JANE LILLIAN ROBINSON.  Nothing is known of this couple but I believe that Jane LORD could have been in Dunedin for a while!  William Henry deceased between 1890 and 1899.  No death found for him as yet.

2 sons 1) Claude Henry (Thomas) Fatchen b 1900, died in NZ 1985 2) Roy William 1902-1915 buried in Wellington NZ.

Grace deserted Thomas P Fatchen "a fortnight after their arrival" in New Zealand and he divorced her in 1917. 

It seems she may have married a William BEATTIE in 1918.

I am at the moment unable to check any possible deaths/remarriages in NSW as there the BDM is not working here as they are doing maintenance apparently.

So that is where I am with Grace Alice LORD-FATCHEN.

Her siblings are LILA EVELYN LORD b 22/9/1888, LILLY b 14/7/1886, ARTHUR ELGIE b 13/8/1890.

Also can anyone tell me how to find out what details would be on NZ certificates please.

There is a marriage on the NZ BDM for a Grace Alice LORD to a William BEATTIE in 1918.

If you go to this page on the NZ BDM website you will be able to see what is on the NZ certs. If you do order from there you should obtain the "printout", which is a scan of the original register.

Also…. Thinking she could have “married” yet again, if you put a “full stop” in the surname field, and Grace Alice in the forename field you get a long list of potentials. You will need your calculator out to see which of them was born c1879

In 1919 William Beattie is a Grocer in Wellington.

But in 1945 trustees for his mother are trying to find him

Looks like Thomas did not wait around either. He married again in 1918 to a Lottie NEWBERRY and they had two daughters. He left a will which is online at

His son Claude left a will also.

Hi thank you for the information on the family.  I had seen yesterday the newspaper report re the Divorce, very interesting!  Thanks for the probate record and the information on the Missing Beattie, could be he and Grace left for (wherever). 

Anyway I will do some more checking in the other states as these people are all over the place.

Unfortunately this Grace is not the one you seek.   

[She was the daughter of Margaret and Ira Spencer LORD of Wellington, and born in 1902. 
NZ Death :   Grace MOCKRIDGE (not Mockbridge) - died 2000 - d.o.b.  21 September 1902.  ]
