My ggg grandfather was William R Nathaniel Shepherd born in 1824 either in Virginia or South Carolina. He died in Logan county ky in 1874. His wife was Eliza Jane Grayson. I have his father as James Shepherd and mother as Elizabeth (last name unknown). I need more information on James Shepherd and Elizabeth. Please help if you have any info. Thanks!

William is only shown as William R Shepherd on the 1870 census (age 45) Place of birth South Carolina

His marriage also only has his name as William R Shepherd

I’m guessing it stands for Robert. Because his son, my gg grandfather was Robert James Shepherd. Some records William is listed as Nathaniel Shepherd.
His mother Elizabeth was listed with him on census record so I’m assuming here that James had already passed away.
James has been hard to track down.
