Catherine Campbell (or Ferguson)
« on: Sunday 13 August 23 14:13 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to cemetery records for North Bute and Rothesay?  I believe my GGrandmother may have died here between 1884 and 1889.  I have been unable to find records for her so far so thought it might be worth considering headstones.  Grateful for any help. Thanks.

Have you looked for a death on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Was she born Ferguson & married Campbell or vice versa?

When was she born?

Hi, Yes I've looked on Scotlands People using the info that I have but have had no success.  I have also been unable to find the birth of her son (my Grandfather) on Scotlands people (reportedly Rothesay).  Campbell was her birth name.  She was married to Duncan Ferguson, my GGrandfather.  He remarried in 1889 as a widower.

There are 2 Duncan Ferguson marriages in 1889 - neither in Bute.  Who did Duncan marry?

When was the first marriage as SP is only showing 2 marriages for a Duncan Ferguson & Catherine Campbell - the earliest is 1905

Please give details of your grandfather whose birth you can't find - name & birthdate?

Hi, Duncan remarried Agnes Millar in Glasgow in 1889. I have this from SP.
My Grandfather, David Campbell Ferguson's birth date is unknown although by some detective work from other documents we believe it to be around 1883 to 1886.  He claimed to have been born in Rothesay but there are no records of him unfortunately.

Also, I have no details of the first marriage unfortunately but my grandfather's parents' names are recorded on his own wedding document in 1923. He also used a Rothesay address for pay to be sent to when he was 'demobbed' in 1919. The address is given as 'Argyle' street, Rothesay but the number is not clear.

Hi JanmacD

Can you give Duncan's details from the 1889 marriage cert you mention? Where was the marriage (sorry, you mentioned Glasgow), what was his age and occupation. Also, his parents' details on the cert? What makes you think that this connects to David C?

You mentioned a possible death window for Catherine from 1884 to 1889. What is the reference to 1884? Is this simply from estimated date of birth for David C?

From someone's family tree, a 1923 marriage for a David Ferguson, aged 37 and parents Duncan F and Catherine Campbell, took place in Oban and the bride is showing as Mary Ann McInnes. One of the witnesses was a Donald Ferguson, address for him The Lodge, Kilfinan. Donald F shows on the Valuation Rolls for 1920 at North Lodge, Kilfinan. The 1921 census for him might help here.

Have you looked for David in the censuses 1891-1921?

Have you checked David's death registration in 1962 to see what it says for his parents' names?
