Help with a word in a 1924 solider’s letter of condolence please
« on: Monday 14 August 23 13:25 BST (UK) »
I am translating a letter of condolence about my great great uncle's death in 1924.

Details on his story have been shared in this topic:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=875437.0

"officers, Lt Col. and sappers": It's got to be a military rank but this is just my guess and i'm not convinced it's correct.

I would greatly appreciate any help or possible corrections elsewhere in the letter.

Quote
62 Seabrook Rd,
Dec 9 Hythe
Kent

Dear Mrs Snow,
As I am on leave I
only heard yesterday of the
very sad death of your son
who has been with me now
In the 9’ Coy for some months.
I am just writing these few
lines to express to you and
your family my very deep
sympathy in your great loss
and I know that all my
officers, [Lt Col.] and sappers
will wish to join with me
In these sentiments of very
real regret at such a
premature end to a promising

young life. I am sure you
will realise as so many of
us did during the war who
lost brothers & sons that
they have been taken from
us young and active because
they are wanted for better
work elsewhere. It is the
only way to look on it.
He was a very nice boy
and I had a high opinion
of him, always cheerful and
ready for anything.
Believe me when I send
you my very deep sympathy.

Yours sincerely,
Arthur B. Clough
OC. 9’ Fld Coy RE
