Meaning of Monument ?
« on: Monday 14 August 23 16:44 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help with interpreting the meaning, if any, of this memorial?
Glasgow, Eastern Necropolis. First burial (a drowning - about 1881). Subsequent 4 family members until about 1935.
There is a tower (lighthouse?), covered with a sheet, an elaborate shield with family names and dates, and a figure (cherub?) who has unfortunately lost its head.   The whole monument is about 6 feet high.
There's nothing else like it in the vicinity, and I would love to uncover its meaning.

Urn - symbol for death and sadness, represents death of body not the soul. Drape represents veil between life and death. Cherub would represent death of a child.

I think those interpretations are correct, however strange in a graveyard the
use of lighthouses in Methodism particularly symbolised seeing help when lost at sea, that meaning people who were sinners could see help was near ,the lighthouse being Salvation, I remember one  Sunday School chorus, :-
“Row For The Lighthouse, “I have never seen one in a graveyard though and we F.H. researchers visit  plenty of them don’t we!

Thank you.  This is all very helpful.  The object on the left is definitely a tower, and looks to me like a classical lighthouse, with an open, pillared top. It's not an urn, although the top of the tower could be interpreted as that.
This all confirms the burial detail.  The monument is for a burial in 1881 of a young unmarried woman, who drowned with others in a sailing accident off the Clyde coast.
I have the death record and newspaper articles confirming this.

Thanks for the details, yes, you can now see why a lighthouse was chosen .
It sort of symbolised  a beacon of hope to people who were troubled, a refuge and the hope of Salvation.
The lighthouse meaning God’s forgiveness , and in those days people were very hopeful of Salvation.
It is quite poignant ,a simple but strongly held faith.
