Disem on WW1 medal index
« on: Monday 14 August 23 19:44 BST (UK) »
Probably a silly question but I can’t work out what ‘disem’ means on a medal index. Trying to piece together a timeline and hoping this is his discharge date - see attached.

Thanks

That Battalion was Disembodied entirely on that Date in September 1919
He may not have been Demobbed but continued in the Army

Territorial Force Soldiers had to be "Embodied" to go Overseas as their Original Role was to stay at Home
After the War they had to be Declared "Disembodied"
This didn't apply to Regular Army Soldiers

Just to expand a bit on Alamo's comment. Members of the Territorial Force had to be embodied before they could be used on any active service, whether at home or abroad. Because the TF had been specifically raised to defend the homeland (based on the centuries old custom of the Militias), its members had sign a document titled the Imperial and General Service Obligation before they could be sent overseas, as in the First World War. Theoretically this was voluntary, but due to the fervour shown by many young men to go and fight for their country at the start of the war, very few opted not to sign.

Thanks for the explanation Alamo; had been trying to establish if he could have fathered a child born in Westminster in 1918. He was born in Wantage, Berkshire but in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, in 1911. Married in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, in 1920 but deserted his wife and 2 children around 1924. Believed by family to have had another child, but I don’t think the one born in 1918 can be his.

With his Name Number and Regt we could look to see if he was Wounded and sent back to Hospital in Westminster area in 1917
Though if he wasn't married then his Name wouldn't have been declared on any Birth Registration even if he was the Father
The Baby could only have been Registered in the Mother's Maiden Name/Birth Name not his.
Only a DNA test of the Ancestor possibly may find a hit but that's a very rare chance.

The baby is registered with the mother’s surname, maiden name ‘-‘,  and he was baptised as the son of Annie. Thanks for the help,
Deirdre

Hi Alamo, here’s his entry (top one). Does this give you enough detail to see if he was wounded?
Born 21 April 1899
