Good afternoon,

this time a surname and abode to decipher in the following 1641 entry.

Alverey ? of Ozuwell bured [buried] December 28 [1641]

The parish register page is missing for this year.

Thank you for taking the time to look.

Regards,

Janet

I think the place might be Churwell. it certainly starts 'Ch'

Possibly the surname is Kirtley.

I can't see a "Ch" - what is the second letter below the line that looks like a "g" or a long "z"  ???
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

It's an 'h' - the curl to the right in the descender is very distinctive.

(I thought Churwell too, before reading JenB's post.)

In fact the clerk has written it in several different ways on the same page!

Good afternoon,

thank you to all who responded.  I totally agree with Churwell, but, I cannot find another occurrence of Kirtley, or possible variant of that surname in Batley or surrounding environs.

He may have been an incomer?

Regards,

Janet

Did you try looking for Kirkley and variants? Looking at it again, the middle letter is quite similar to the 'c' in December.

That would give Kircley, though I don't know if that would be feasible as a variant. It would probably sound the same, but a c-k variation at that point in a name isn't one that I've come across very often.
