Ellen spooner
« on: Thursday 17 August 23 15:06 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has access to the North Surrey School District admission & discharge records. I'm looking for an Ellen Spooner who was discharged from Kensington and Chelsea as destitute and to be sent to North Surrey School. Her discharge was in 1872 and she was at the time seven years old.

Regards, Adriana

Says discharged from the school Jan 1878

Possibly she is in Chelsea in the 1871 census, age 6, daughter of Robert and Maria.

I don't think that's her, because she's discharged from the workhouse on 3rd June 1872. She couldn't be admitted in May? Unless dates are wrong?
And parents also don't match up as I have her death record and parents are listed as Ellen Deacon and William Spooner.

I did have a quick look at this one when the old thread was going, it's pretty certain that she is the one in Chelsea in 1871.
However, it is possible perhaps that Ellen in Australia did not remember her parents names, and just made them up?

There is a death in Chelsea for a 34 yr old Maria Spooner in 2nd Qrt 1872 - ref 1a/159.

Yes, Maria Spooner died in Chelsea workhouse, 24 May 1872.
Ellen was admitted three days later, destitute.

Admission for Maria, age 33, on 24 April 1872. Sick
Daughter Eliza, 7 months, with her.
Eliza also died in the workhouse, 15 August 1872 :(

Birth
SPOONER, ELIZA
Mother's Maiden Surname: RODGERS
GRO Reference: 1871  D Quarter in CHELSEA  Volume 01A  Page 282

Couple of other Spooner - Ro(d)gers births, including Louisa Mary Ann in 1867. And a baptism for Louisa at Paddington. Father a Labourer. She was 3 on the 1871 census.

I don't see anything for Ellen. No birth registration, no baptism. What happened to her after 1878?
And I'm not sure if there is a marriage for Robert Spooner and Maria!

quote from jonw65 previous post.

And I'm not sure if there is a marriage for Robert Spooner and Maria!

Banns of marriage between Robert Spooner- bachelor & Maria Rodgers-spinster were read on Sundays 10/17/24th May 1868 at Christ Church, Marylebone

Does not look as though they went ahead though!

John

Well found, John.
Louisa was born (and registered as Spooner) in 1867. I guess Robert must have been her father, as per 1868 baptism, which was also in May.
Not so sure about Ellen though!

I never considered that Ellen made her parents' names up. Makes it quite hard to trace as there isn't much to confirm that this is definitely my Ellen Spooner . Thank you all for your help.
