The Gill family Stainburn, Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 17 August 23 20:15 BST (UK) »
I am currently tracing the Gill family of Stainburn, on my wife’s side of the family , and going round in circles!
I will try and explain long hand, but for those of you whom have access to Ancestry, my username is lawrence1480 and the Gills can be found in the Peet family tree and a separate tree the Gills.
For info. Stainburn was considered a township of Kirkby Overblow

1. John Gill born 1707, Leathley, died 15th June 1788, Kirkby Overblow
Married 17th February 1734, Kirkby Overblow
2. Grace Wilkinson born 1711, Kirkby Overblow, died 13th December 1785
My wifes 6 x great grandparents. The dates should be reliable, and taken from a headstone in St Mary’s , Stainburn
Their children;
3. Anne Gill baptised 26th April, 1736, Kirkby Overblow
4. Elizabeth Gill baptised 7th September, 1740, Kirkby Overblow
#5. Jonathan Gill baptised 2nd January, 1742 Kirkby Overblow
6. Sarah Gil baptised 7th April, 1745, Kirkby Overblow
7. Mary Gill baptised  8th November, 1747, Kirkby Overblow
8. Grace Gill baptised 15th July 1750, Kirkby Overblow
9. John Gill baptised 15th April, 1753, Kirkby Overblow

5. Jonathan Gill baptised 2nd Jan 1742, died 30th October 1795, married
11. Grace Hartley 12th May 1772, Leathley
11. Grace Gill nee Hartley 1755- 1797
My wifes 5 x great grandparents

5. Jonathan Gill was buried with his parents at Stainburn and left a Will which confirms many of his siblings and their spouses

I can only find one child of this union:
12. Ellen/ Ellenor Gill baptised 7th July 1777, Leathley she married
13. Robert Lamb on 18th December, 1797, Leathley
My wife’s 4 x great grandparents

Incidentally 5. Jonathan Gill left nothing in his Will to either his wife Grace or his daughter 12. Ellen/ Ellenor???
I am just trying to confirm I have the correct lineage ? The situation is complicated by a plethora of John and Grace Gill all with very similar dates
TIA

Is it possible that there were 2 separate Jonathans?:  :-\

1) Jonathan, son of John & Grace Gill, baptised 2nd January 1743 in Kirkby Overblow.

2) Jonathan, son of Jonathan Gill, baptised 24th February 1744 in Leathley.

From what I can see, Jonathan Gill & Grace Hartley had:

- Polly (1773)
- Sarah (1775)
- Ellenor (1777)
- Grace (1779)
- Hannah (1781)
- Jonathan (1784)
- Betty (1786)
- Jonathan (1789)

All baptised in Leathley. Interesting to note that there was no John, but the first son was called Jonathan.

I would find it very odd if Jonathan (1742-1795) had married and had this many children, yet neglected to mention any of them in his will.

Perhaps Ellenor's father was actually the Jonathan baptised in 1744 to another Jonathan, and not the son of John & Grace Gill.

There is a burial of a 52-year-old Jonathan Gill of Leathley, farmer, in 1798. It seems he also left a will (vol.142, f.188); if this is Ellenor's father, then hopefully this is his will and will confirm the relationship.

Queenie  :)

EDIT - I will also add that I could be completely wrong, as it is very late, but I was curious!

I'm really struggling to read this headstone:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/180278862/jonathan-gill#view-photo=156710604

When does it say Grace Gill died?

I think the headstone says:

[illegible]
aged 81 years,
likewise the body of Jonathan Gill, son of the aforesaid John and Grace Gill, who died October 30 1795, aged 52 years

...

I don't see a mention of a wife of Jonathan?

According to Wharfegen (http://www.wharfegen.org.uk/) there were several Jonathan Gills in and around Stainburn and Leathley at that time. They can be seen in their families, which should help you to work out who's who. The site is free to use, though you need to register.

I noticed that one of the sources they quote is a PR transcript by the Wharfedale Family History Group, which has since amalgamated with another society to form the Airedale and Wharfedale FHS. This has its own extensive online database of transcripts etc - in this case it's for members only, but internet membership is relatively inexpensive.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thank you Queenie and Arthurk
As with most family history queries, there are probably more questions than answers but certainly a few different avenues to explore.
Queenie I am intrigued by the will of Jonathan Gill who died 1798 (vol. 142, f.188), not a lot of information on line, but if I applied for the Will would there be more detailed information ( forgive my ignorance)
Regards
Lawrence

Queenie I am intrigued by the will of Jonathan Gill who died 1798 (vol. 142, f.188), not a lot of information on line, but if I applied for the Will would there be more detailed information

The information contained in wills can vary, but the testator generally names their spouse (if living) and their living children; sometimes grandchildren are also mentioned. If the daughters were married at the time the will was written, they are usually referred to by their married name.

The will can be ordered from the same place amondg mentioned above:
http://www.york.ac.uk/borthwick/remote-services/copying/order-form/

First name(s): Jonathan
Last name: Gill
Document type: Will
Document reference: vol.142, f.188
Year: 1798
Date: 1798, AUG
Place: Leathley
