Rawden (Rodon) Hague b 1823
« on: Friday 18 August 23 19:39 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the record of a death and/or burial for Rawden Hague.   His name is sometimes shown as Rodon.   He was born 5th August 1823 and baptised Rawden (parents Richards and Sarah) on 31st August 1823 in Swinton, Yorkshire.  His wife Charlotte was from the Manchester area where they were married.  Charlotte along with some of their children was deaf and dumb.   She died in the workhouse in Sheffield in 1880 and was buried in a public grave in the General Cemetery, Sheffield.   The couple had lived on Sorby Street, Sheffield and Rawden was a file cutter.  I am aware that there were extended family (Hagues)  in the Wath on Dearne area.
I am unable to find any trace of a death and burial for Rawden or even if he survived Charlotte and remarried.  I wondered if anyone could help.
Many thanks

Had you seen the report of Charlotte's Court appearance - December 1870 - where she was sent to the Workhouse? No mention of a husband/family in the item.

Charlotte is listed as married on 1871. You'd expect the workhouse powers that be to be fairly sure of marital status as they'd be looking for spouse to support her if possible

Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 14 Aug 1866
Carrries an advert about the Leases of Houses in Sorby Street -
"... the rest are in the yard at the back, and are occupied by Wm Goodwinson, Roden Hague, Wm Morewood, ..."

Thank you for your replies.   I hadn't seen the report re Charlottes 'offence'.   Does it say what she had done to justify this punishment?  I had wondered if the  marriage had failed and Rodon left but you are right - the workhouse would want paying.

Incidentally, I noticed that one of their children, Joseph 26, was also in the workhouse on the 1871 census.  He his shown as being a basketmaker and was deaf, dumb and blind. Such a dreadful shame for these people.  They didn't stand a chance.

I wonder if Rawden was deceased by 1871 as surely he would have kept Joseph at home.   Looking at hanes teulu's find he was still with us in 1866.

Thank you again for your efforts
