Which regiment?
« on: Saturday 19 August 23 16:49 BST (UK) »
Thomas Whelan, my 3x great grandad died aged 63 in 1883. He was living in Hull, Yorkshire at the time of his death but he was born in Liverpool.  On his death certificate his occupation states 'Pensioner - 46th Regiment'.  This confirms the 1881 census that said he was an army pensioner. Previous censuses said he was a Pedlar.
However, on one of his daughter's wedding certificate, her father's occupation was a 'private in the 36th regiment'. He was deceased at the time of her marriage.

I would like to do more research into his army career but not sure where to start or who to ask for further advice.  Is is possible he was in two regiments?

Per his army records he was born in Corfu.

Private Thomas Whelan, 683, 46th Regiment. Served from 1833 (aged 13 years and 11 months) to 1859, including spells in Gibraltar, West Indies, North America, South America, and Corfu. A shoemaker by trade. Pension paid in Liverpool to start with, then Hull by 1865.

Corfu had been ceded to Britain at the end of the Napoleonic Wars hence why there was a British garrison there from 1815 until 1864 when it was ceded to Greece. Assuming that the reason Thomas Whelan was born in Corfu was because his father was serving in the Army there, there were 3 British infantry regiments stationed in Corfu in 1819-20: the 8th (later King's) Regiment*, the 28th (later North Gloucestershire) Regiment and the 32nd (later Cornwall) Regiment. The 32nd is perhaps the most likely since they were closely associated with the 46th (South Devon) Regiment which Thomas later joined, and with which the 32nd would merge as part of the Childers Reform of 1881.

Of course Thomas Whelan's father might have been a civilian working as a trader or civil servant, with no direct connection with the Army. I'm not sure how important his parentage is to the OP.

footnote
*Since the OP says that Thomas was born in Liverpool, perhaps his father had a connection with Liverpool which in turn makes the 8th Regiment of Foot a better contender for his father's regiment.
