British Subject born in Germany

Hello all

My ancestor John Robert Johnson was born (according to various census reports) as a British subject in Bremen/Bremerhaven/Germany in about 1853. He was a mariner who settled in North Shields in the north east of England. On his marriage license (1883) his father's name is recorded as James, a blacksmith. Can anyone help with how I would go about trying to get a birth certificate for him please?
