nz Birth Cert fathers occupation
« on: Monday 21 August 23 00:00 BST (UK) »
I would like assistance to work out what the occupation of the adoptive father is on this 1929 NZ birth cert. Driver? Miner?

[Copy certificate attached]

I can decipher the rest of it, just having trouble working this word out.

Well yes but I do not think that it looks like a well formed "D" or "d" to me in that sort of writing which is why I think it could also be "Miner" or some other occupation.

I think it is  Driver.

Yes looks like Driver to me as well.

I deliver our local community newspaper to houses in Owen street.

You can see the house on Google street view.

I think an M would bear more relation to his Ws

Looking at SVLs subsequent occupations Driver seems more likely to me.
Also, Wellington….where was the mine?

Actually it does look like a well formed capital "D" in cursive writing by someone who writes for a living ie a registrar or registrar's cleark.  I can remember being taught the hook.

While there was some mining in the Wellington surrounds in the very early days of settlement eg 1840s on it would not be an occupation for a city dweller in the 1930s.

The 1931 electoral roll has his occupation as Carrier, although he appears later to have become a Tailor.
