Not sure who this is!
« on: Monday 21 August 23 14:57 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters

I thought that I knew who this handsome chap was, but now I'm not so sure as the insignia on his hat doesn't seem to tie up with what I thought.

Royal Warwickshire Regiment?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Clearly an officer. Who do you think it is?

That's not  a British cap badge.  Do you have any colonial connections?

KN -- I hope that you don't mind but I took the liberty to ask an expert that I know on another forum -- he has identified the badge as follow:

'A very rare photo I should think.  The 30th Infantry Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force and recruited from British Columbia.  The cap badge was circular and the collar badges oval, and both were only worn whilst in the U.K.  The unit was initially retitled as Reserve without change of number or insignia, but then quickly absorbed by the 1st Reserve Battalion, which fed drafts of reinforcements to Canadian Infantry Base Depots in France'.

”The 30th Battalion was authorized on 27 October 1914 and embarked for Britain on 23 February 1915. It was redesignated as the 30th Reserve Battalion, CEF on 18 April 1915 to provide reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field.”

“On 4 January 1917 its personnel were absorbed by the 1st Reserve Battalion, CEF. The battalion was subsequently disbanded on 1 September 1917.  The 30th Battalion recruited in British Columbia and was mobilized at Victoria.”

As the 30th Battalion C.E.F. has been suggested, this may be of some help ?

Hello Everyone,

I had no idea that this picture would generate such an energetic response!  Thank you for all the knowledge, ideas and suggestions.

I had suspected that this might be either one of two brothers:

Philip Joseph LOCKE, born 1879 in Leamington Spa, or
Victor Franklin LOCKE, born 1885 in Leamington Spa.

Both brothers emigrated to Canada in 1908 - so yes, definitely colonial links.  They lived in British Columbia - so the information already supplied is bang on.

I did not find them listed in the 30th Infantry Battalion Nominal Roll.

Both were active in the Warwickshire Regiment before they left for Canada, and I think that Philip took part in the Boer War.  Philip is recorded as having been captured in WW1 and spent several years as a POW.

I'm amazed that you've identified so much from the photo.  I attach the best close up of the cap badge that I can manage - I don't think that it's the same as the images that have already been kindly attached.

FYI (as I know that you're a bunch who likes these details), Philip's only child Richard P LOCKE, was a bomber pilot in WW2 and was lost after coming down in the North Sea after a bombing raid over Germany.

again, many thanks for your interest.
