Both brothers attended the Berkhamsted School - Philip Joseph is recorded as an 11 year old scholar in the 1891 Census and Victor Franklin is recorded as a 16 year old student in the 1901 Census.

I have liaised with Lesley Koulouris, the archivist at Berkhamsted School and she confirmed that both boys were there. After further checks in the archives, she found that Philip Joseph was a member of the school's first team for football and she came up with a photograph of the team for the 1895/96 season. Cross checking with other documents, she was able to identify Philip Joseph as being the young man centre of the back row.

I have attached the team photograph and also a head and shoulders of the soldier and the young Philip Joseph for comparison.
