Had he transferred post Jan. 1917 he would have been re-numbered
by the 6/KSLI with a 6 digit no. only his 5 digit no. is listed.

So does that confirm that he was under age as he would have only turned 18 early February 1917? I just checked with his granddaughter, and she seems to think he enlisted on his 18th birthday but obviously not if he wouldn't have had the right number...

It doesn't confirm he was under age only that he wasn't
in 6/KSLI after Jan. 1917.
Can you tell us what records you've found which you mentioned earlier
as I can't see a service record for him?

These were passed down in the family:
I can't read much of the handwriting on the pass unfortunately

Looking at his War Gratuity of £13.10s.
We can roughly calculate when he joined.
The rate was £5 for year 1 & 10s. for every month thereafter.
So he had 2 years 5 months service up to demob.
We don't know his exact date but it looks like around Sept. 1919.
We know he was still serving in Aug.
Attested April/May 1917 (or thereabout).
By right he should have had the post Jan. 6 digit no. but it may
be that the issuing office hadn't got round to it yet.
Does that fit with his DOB?
Added:
Just re-read the War gratuity small print & the cut-off date was Aug. 3rd. 1919.
So he last completed month was July.
This pushes him back to Feb./March 1917.

Oh thanks, so now we have an approximate date for when he was transferred to South Lancs!

Just spotted his DOB Feb. 1899 so if he attested Feb. 1917 would be around his 18th. birthday.
Maybe G/dau. was right.
Looked at the 5th. S. Lancs. diary for 1917 & the was a draft of 257 men in Aug. 1917 &
300 in Jan. 1918.
No ID. of Regts.
