Francis/Claude Francis Dubois 1750/60s
« on: Tuesday 22 August 23 14:52 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to research a Dubois line in London and finding it challenging as there's Irish/French links and also I'm not very familiar with London genealogy.

There is a tree here on Ancestry which I have been comparing against my research:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/14446992?cfpid=18034398810

In this tree she has Mary Ann Dubois (1811) born to Claude Francis Dubois and Susannah Freeman. She has a baptism for Claude in 1761 in Chelsea. However in none of the other records I can find pertaining to this family is the "Claude" first name mentioned. There is a 1757 baptism of Francis Dubois at Coleman Street in 1757 to Abraham and Elizabeth.

In the baptism of Francis Alonzo Dubois to Francis and Susannah in Colchester 1804 it mentions that his father was a Sergeant in the 18th Dragoons, so I'm aware he might have moved around.

Anyway sorry for the ramble, essentially any help with this family would be really appreciated as I don't really know where to start with the Irish or French genealogy, and I know people here a lot more clued up on it than me!

Best wishes
Samuel

When was the member of your Dubois family born?

Do not follow any tree, there is no research to back up the claims on the one I saw "Murphy Family"

Francis Dubois of the 18th Light Dragoons aged 27 and Susanna SHERRIDEN age 18 of this parish

were married 16 July 1800 St. Denys with St George, Yorkshire.

Witness Mary Ann Sherriden and William Brown.

Francis Dubois could write and so could Mary Ann Sherriden.

So for a start they have the wrong name for the spouse.

If you google 18th Light Dragoons you can see the history of the regiment

It did not become the 18th (King's Irish) regiment until 1805

I 100% agree; it is best not to follow public trees.

I assume Susannah's incorrect surname came from the married name of her daughter?

A John Tiffin Freeman and Mary Ann Dubois married on 12th November 1832 in St Leonard, Shoreditch. The witnesses were Francis Dubois and Matilda Dubois. All signed their name.

A John Freeman and his son, also John, were living in Liverpool at the time of the 1841 census. Also present was a Susan Dubois, born Ireland. However, her birth date does not match that of her marriage record (c.1782); on the census, it is given as c.1771. However, perhaps John was not aware of his mother-in-law's exact age? That is, if I have the correct family:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ25-FY4

Annoyingly, I cannot attach the complete census from FamilySearch, but here is Mary's entry on the 1851 census:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKS-3Q1

She is with her husband and children, Henry, Emily and Agnes. She is born Ireland, c.1811.

Great find on the marriage!

I agree I don't usually trust public trees at all. I was only having a look at this one as I'd hit my own dead ends.

My line is from Mary Anne Tiffin Freeman, born 1831 to John Tiffin and Mary Ann. This one perplexed me for the longest time with the birth coming before the marriage and her younger siblings born much later. But it seems to have been confirmed by DNA and also the Tiffin middle name is very helpful.

Thank you very much - I'd never seen that census before.

Have just found this now given the new 1777 birth date. Not much more info but does seem to confirm the age.
