Eagleton family Liverpool, Lancashire, England
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 12:07 BST (UK) »
The children of George Eagleton 1861-1916 and Catherine nee Leitch c1862-1918 numbered 9; 6 of whom I can't find beyond the 1891 Census, the children were: George William b Q4 1884 Liverpool, William b 11 Feb 1886 West Derby, Alfred b Q3 1887 Wolverhampton, Albert John b 1887 Wolverhampton, Mary Jane b Q4 1891 Wolverhampton and James b Q3 1896 West Derby.
There was a Mary Jane b 1893 shown as an inmate at Walton Test House, at 1901 Census got wrong year of birth but correct place.
At 1901 their father George was a visitor in Walthamstow, don't know where Catherine was?
I wonder if you'll have better luck finding them?

Albert is an 'inmate' at the Holy Trinity Certified Industrial Schools at 77 Grafton Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool at the time of the 1901 census.

According to the 1902 workhouse register entry for George and Catherine's children Jessie and Percy - whom you haven't mentioned - William is also in the same school as Albert. The entry states that Jessie and Percy have been deserted.

George and Catherine Eagleton were convicted of child neglect in 1895. According to the Liverpool Mercury, Catherine was sent to prison for 4 months, whilst George was bound over.

Very sad.

I'm wondering if James (1896) was actually John James?

There is a 1901 workhouse register that mentions:

- Mary J. Eagleton, born 1893.
- John J. Eagleton, born 1896.

The name and address of the nearest relations are: Bro. William, A. G. Industrial School, Grafton Street. I'm thinking the A is Albert and the G is George.

There is an entry for John James in the Belmont Road Workhouse on the 1901 census.

What is his marital status or is all the info given "visitor" ?

I can see Catherine on a few Liverpool workhouse registers, with the last being in 1917, when she was described as 'widow of George.'

There is a death registration for a Kate Eagleton of the right age in the West Derby R.D. in 1917.

What wonderful research! I couldn't see the wood for the trees! To answer some of your questions: the burials of Elizabeth and James were from a different family (looks like George's parent's children), the mmn was Askew so no need to jump on a bus!
I found a Kate Eagleton on the GRO died Q1 1918 West Derby aged 55 which seemed about right as not sure of her actual birth date which I couldn't find on the SP website. I couldn't find her in 1911. Found burial record for her 10 Jan 1918 at Everton cemetery in paupers section-how sad.
George at 1901 was just a visitor, marriage status not recorded.
James was recorded as just James on the GRO but guess they didn't record his real name?
There is a burial for J J on Findagrave died 1959 born 14 Jul 1896? A seaman's record for just J at 1913 on Ancestry on Crew list?
Percy and Jessie I found myself but not in the workhouse so that is why I didn't mention them as part of the 6 children.
