Mary Johnson
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 12:22 BST (UK) »
On 26 Feb 1826 Mary Johnson married John Hasel. They had a number of children including Elizabeth 1830 and William 1832.
On 16 May 1839 Mary Hazel married William Hawkins. 14 6. Cambridge.
Her abode Coronation St, occ. Shopkeeper , father Thomas Johnson.

In 1841 William Orpen, Shopkeeper, his wife Mary, son William 1, and two step-children Elizabeth and William Hazell, were living in Histon. note. Wiliam Orpen born 1776 (not 1791)

William Orpen born D Qtr 1839 Vol14 P14 mmn Johnson - GRO. Also ....
William Orpen bpt 19 Jan 1840, of Coronation St. father William, Shopkeeper, mother Mary.

In 1851 Mary's father Thomas Johnson is living with them.

Can anyone see a burial/death for John Hazel and William Hawkins, and a marriage (if there was one) for William Orpen and Mary. And probable father of William Orpen 1839?

I think William Hawkins and William Orpen are one and the same person.

The transcription of the marriage from Cambs & Huntingdon FHS shows that he did not sign but made his mark. It also gives his father as Thomas.

The Censuses give his dob as c1776 and pob as Impington. There is a baptism for a William Orpin in Impington 19 May 1776 parents Thomas and Alice.

That certainly makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

Interesting that everything about the marriage record is correct and as you would expect, but where does the name Hawkins comes from ?

Did you see when John Hazel died?

I can only guess that the Hawkins/Orpen confusion is down to strong local accents.

I have been unable, so far, to find a death for John Hazell.

William Orpen's first marriage was in 1798 to Elizabeth Traves. They had just a daughter Mary 1800 ..... as far as I can see.

When William married Mary Johnson he was well into his sixties. They had three children. William was  94 years of age when he died.

Elizabeth died 1837 and was buried 19 March 1837 in Impington.

Mary seems to be the only child of the marriage.
