Tivr/Tiver? Llanarthney
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 23:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

Wondering if anyone has come across this address (or similar) in Llanarthney. They relate to a David Lewis who witnessed the marriage of 2 different Mary Lewis in Llanarthney, one in 1830 and in 1834. Tivr/Tiver is entered after his name and such entries, in these marriage records, seem to relate to the address of that person, therefore I don’t think it is an occupation or title (but could be wrong!) These seem to be the only 2 marriages he witnessed.

Thanks

I wondered if it was "Tivy (Teifi)" but associate the name with Newcastle Emlyn, straddling Cardiganshire/Carmarthenshire.

Could be a house or farm - I've seen a Tivy House, Ammanford in the late 19th century.

Do you think he could be the David Lewis that married Elizabeth Davies 4th August 1803 at St Peter, Llanarthney,  the signature is similar though more mature as a wedding witness

That’s the working theory. The theory being that they are the parents of Mary Lewis who married William Treharne. If correct, David was a Shoemaker and looking at the baptisms of their children David and family moved around a lot (Troedyrhiw, Pantyfynnon and Cofen Glase). Looking back at my records the baptism for their daughter Mary was 23 Feb 1813, Llanarthney. The baptismal address was Tyrelin. I did wonder if Tivr/Tiver could be some form of alternative spelling of Tyrelin, but this seems a stretch too far. The last baptismal address I have is for a son David on 17 Oct 1824 at C(G)Owen Glase and this is the address David (abt 1776) and family were at in 1841. So in 1830 and 1834 it seems more likely that David was at Gofen Clase.

I had been puzzling over Mary Lewis' abode 1813 - although I was reading it as Tyrclŷn.

You could well be correct

"Tir clyn"

Excellent thank you. Interesting to see Troedyrhiw is close by, so perhaps he didn’t travel too far for his work. Have you got an expanded view of the map to see if Pantyfynnon or Cofen Glase are close by or even what might be Tivr/Tiver?

You can zoom/scroll the map already posted. There's a Pant-y-ffynnon at bottom right hand corner.

Yet to check for Cofen Glase
