Caleb Brotherton - prisoner/tramp

Good evening

I have posted previously regarding Caleb Brotherton. Born and baptised 1819 in Sabden, moved to Manchester by 1841, moved to Scotland with his family and in 1852 he was convicted of housebreaking. He served time in Millbank Prison then Portland. On release he joined the army but his last whereabouts may be Glossop in 1875 where he was reported to have been sentenced to hard labour having being discovered to be a tramp sleeping on a haystack.

As the report doesn't give specific details I am assuming he may be the same Caleb. I know of another Caleb in the census living in Newton. Lancashire but he is a relative.

I have found no further evidence of him but believe his next location may be in relation to where he was sent to serve hard labour for a month.

Would he have been sent to a local prison or possibly back to Millbank? 

Any help with ideas or information would be very much appreciated.

Yes, I had considered that. I suspect I would need to go to the record office to look for unknown burials. He could have ended up anywhere 🙄

If the body could not be identified - how would you know?

If you use freebmd & just put unknown in the surname & select Derbyshire - you may get an idea of some possibilities if an age is shown

I'm pretty sure I've tried that and I've tried initials. I've looked in various workhouses in 1881 but he may not have made it to that age. I don't even know why he ended up in Glossop. I wondered if he was on his way either to Manchester or back to Scotland.
