The marriage contract of George Colley and Jane Browne
« on: Friday 25 August 23 00:15 BST (UK) »
Kia ora

Someone a long time ago transcribed this marriage contract for me, but they also said that in the 'english' part of it, it states his occupation but they couldn't work it out.   Any help with that would be really appreciated.

I can't see an occupation in there, but there might be one in the bond that it relates to.

Where there have been words inserted, I think the full phrase is "High Ercoll Wellington or Stockton". And in view of the "Nor" following, the partly obscured word at the end of the line above is likely to be "Nor" as well.

(High Ercoll is now spelled High Ercall.)

Many thanks.  Whoever transcribed it said it was in this part of it.

I agree with arthurk that there's no occupation given in this part of it.
Can you post a clip of the top part Bronwen.
It may well be in Latin, but it might give his occupation in that bit.

Line 2
Ironbridge in the County of Salop plebeium(?)

plebeium - plebian? ie 'working class' - maybe the writer was trying make it sound better than  'labourer'!

That is fascinating.  He paid hearth tax for two hearths in 1672.

I wondered whether in fact he rented rather than owned the house.  My mother said they were mostlt agricultural labourers.

Thanks

I have seen plebeius used in older documents to mean "layman", ie not a cleric.
