William Sandles 1824, Lewes Sussex

I'm not really sure whether this is the place to ask this but I wasn't sure where else to put it.

My husbands 3x great grandfather served from 15th July 1842 until 30th September 1867. He first joined the 52nd Foot and then transferred to the 39th Foot in 1857, then to the Royal Canadian Rifles in April 1858.

I have a marriage for him to a Jane Shorten, January 1855 in West Bengal, India but as I don't have Worldwide Ancestry I'm unable to access the full record. His marriage to Elizabeth Shannahan took place in Ireland and the records show that he was a widow, so there was definitely a first marriage.

I had assumed that the marriage to Jane occurred whilst he was possibly serving in India but his service records only show 2 tours overseas, Gibraltar for 9 months and Canada for 9.4 years. There is no mention of any tours in India.

At the time of the marriage to Jane he would have still been serving with the 52nd Foot. A Google search shows that the 52nd Foot were involved in the Indian Mutiny but this seems to later than the marriage.

So I'm just trying to find out whether he would have been in India and why this was not on his service record if he was and also whether the marriage I have found is his or whether I need to go back to the drawing board.

Thank you

Thank you...those details certainly fit. He was a private at the time and his father was William.

A death of Jane Sandles age 30 in Subathoo, Bengal, in the same year, 1855?

Thank you. I'd been trying to find a death and knew it had to be before 1858 as that's when he marries again in Ireland. I'd like to find a birth record for her but as I have no idea where she was born not sure where to start.

His 2nd wife is a strange one as she's from Australia and had changed her name - both forename and surname but her father's surname is the same as her 2nd surname, so she's going to be interesting to chase.

Thank you again. I can add those details to the tree now as definites, rather than possibilities.

William transfers to the 39th Foot in 1857 so I assume that's how he ended up in Ireland.
