Stanton of Fordington
« on: Friday 25 August 23 17:57 BST (UK) »
The London Gazette carried an announcement that a partnership between William Stanton, George Knight Stanton and Henry Stanton, wool staplers and clothiers of Fordington, Dorset, was dissolved on 21 July 1842 " ... so far as regards the said Henry Stanton, who has retired from the said concern ..."

I am intrigued by HS's withdrawal from the family business and would love to know why and what became of him.  He was still in Fordington on the 1841 census, but was not named in the will of his father, William Stanton, which was written in 1843, with a codicil added in 1846, and proved in 1849.  That gives the impression that he died in the 1840s while still a young man, but I have found no evidence for that, nor any later mention of him.

If he had emigrated, wouldn't he still probably have had some kind of mention in his father's will?

Thanks for the Juries information. That seems to have ended in 1843.

If the will doesn’t give the reasons for omission - it’s all speculation.

If Henry “retired” from the family business he was only approx 28yrs of age.  If he did emigrate it may not have been with his fathers approval.   He may also have received his share of the business at the time of the “retirement” hence being omitted from the will.    What did the codicil say?

The codicil varies the arrangements for deciding how the trust is to be conducted in the event of the second marriage of his wife, Lydia, and makes a specific bequest of £300 each to his daughters, Lydia Augusta, Emma and Mary.  In other respects, the will is confirmed.  No mention of Henry.
