Jane CRUBBERS - Can't Find Anything on Surname!
« on: Friday 25 August 23 21:38 BST (UK) »
I've got a massive mystery on my 5x great-grandmother, Jane Crubbers.  I just found her name on her son's death record.  His name was James Haig and his father was Edward Haig.  I had never heard that surname before so I went and did a search on Ancestry, Scotlands People and FindMyPast.

I only got one :o result for the surname on Ancestry and FindMyPast and it was for: Elizabeth Crubbers
in the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, England, Indexes of Wills and Probate, 1518-1858
https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-content/view/406347:62295?tid=&pid=&queryId=4ca8cc657d008d37174352a4b4d46882&_phsrc=Fpw1188&_phstart=successSource

There were 0 results on Scotlands People. :'(

How do I find the actual will listed in the Index? ??? I'm hoping that she might be related to my Jane Crubbers.

Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry wills should be on findmypast.
Have you checked there?
They used to be held at Lichfield Record Office, but have all been moved to Stafford Record Office I believe.

There is this possible birth or christening shohwing for James on SP:

JAMES HAIG
EDWARD HAIG/
22/06/1783
Ref 736 10 / 160
Earlston Berwickshire

Mother's name not included on the index (likely on the OPR too  :-\)

Yes, the mother's name was not on the birth record.  :(

All I found on FindMyPast was the index sadly.

The 1861 has 2 entries for James Haig in Roxburgh - both b 1784

Born Earlston Berwickshire - married to Jane - so this must be your James
Born Jedburgh Roxburgh - married to Mary

Black's Surnames of Scotland lists a name Carruber or Carrubber, derived from the lands of Carriber in West Lothian, although the most recent example he gives is from 1574.

There is always the possibility that it is a mishearing of a name like Carruthers.

I found the listing of the Elizabeth Crubbers will in the Staffordshire Name index and is listed as Crabbers.  So maybe not related.

There's a Carrubbers Close in Edinburgh that runs from the High Street down to Jeffrey Street.
