Fire Fire in Holborn 1848
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 16:33 BST (UK) »
Prior to the great changes in the Holborn Viaduct area in the mid 1800's , I have family members with the surname of Skinner known at No . 67 Holborn Hill .
Family notes state a fire at their tobacconist shop here in 1848 but no date ( I have a sketch of the shop prior to this date ) and they later moved to 92/93 where there are pictures and additional notes of their times here . Possibly this move was due to the fire .

Looking through the old maps online site ( amongst other sources ) , I've been unable to pinpoint the exact position of these premises although I have done with nos . 92 / 93 .  There are large amounts of online info . regarding the viaduct build although I am yet to find info . on whether no . 67 was demolished for the viaduct , or due to the fire itself . I'm not sure whether they were the only building casualties in the fire , how it started or even if there were sadly deaths .
John Henry Stansfield Skinner and his family were living / working in the tobacco trade here and I have an amount of info . on their lives .

Appreciate any thoughts , sources of further info . etc.. or newspaper articles of the fire itself if anyone has access to the archives .
Thankyou in advance .

The Morning Herald 6th May 1848 has a report of a fire at Holborn Hill, it started off at the grocers.  The article does mention Mr Skinner.
You should be able to get a copy of this from the BNA website

There are at least 17 articles about the fire which mention Mr Skinner, tobacconist, in various papers in May 1848. His premises were totally destroyed.

Although I don't have the report ( even know if one exists ) , family info . mentioned previously gives that the building was insured by Phoenix , Sun and Globe .
I'm hoping that Westminster Archives may have a map that may define the premises of the immediate area pre / post fire .
The responses all help , thankyou .

According to John Lockie's Topography of London 1813, Holborn Hill ran "from the N end of Fleet-market to Middle Row".

In that case No.67 was on the south side just west of the junction with Fleet-market and just three buildings east of St Andrews Church.
The link above to Horwood's map of 1819 may take a while to download.
