Ryan and Hardy help please
« on: Friday 09 September 05 17:41 BST (UK) »
I am a bit confused or maybe thick with this one.

I have a Catherine Ryan b either 1876 or 79 her father Peter Ryan and mother Elizabeth (I believe Hardy) married 1875 in Auckland.  Which is where they lived until 1891 ish then moved up to Witton Gilbert.

What I am a bit stuck with is Elizabeth on the later census I have said she was born in Cumberland.  Yet I find her on the census in 61 and 71 born in Bishop Auckland.

Does anyone have an answer, do you think I might be barking up the wrong tree with this Elizabeth, but I can't find another Peter Ryan married to an Elizabeth anywhere.

Look forward to hearing from someone.

Hi Angela

Information from a Census, such as birthplaces and ages, is often not accurate - use it as a guide rather than gospel.

The birth certificate of Catherine Ryan will confirm both parent's names and from there you can get their marriage certificate.

The indexes of Durham County Council confirm a marriage in 1875 in Durham Western of Peter Ryan and Elizabeth Hardy.

If you get that marriage certificate or that entry from the Parish Register you will then have the father's names of both Peter and Elizabeth.

This should enable you to find the correct Census entries from before their marriage.

In a nutshell - use Civil Registration information from Certificates back to 1837 and look for your Census entries that fit in with that information.

Thanks Helen

I am going to records office next week so I will try find Catherine's birth details.  I have her marriage cert, which gives a different age to all the census, which is what is confusing me also.  It doesn't take much.

Hi Angela

I've looked at the 1891 Census entry for your family and from that information it's possible the 1875 marriage was Peter's second marriage.

There is a son Thomas in 1891 aged 19, therefore born well before the 1875 marriage and a seven year gap before the next known child. Have you found this family in 1881 ?

Hi Angela

I don't know if you intend following Peter's family or not, but here's a possible 1861 Census entry for him.

RG9/3715  Folio 81  Page 16  Sch 252
Cragg Wood, Evenwood and Baroney
RYNE
Peter Head Mar 56  Coal Miner Ireland
Catherine Wife Mar 48 Ireland
Peter Son 16 Putter in Coal Mine Durham Newfield
Mary Ann Dau 13 Durham Newfield

The same family is on the 1851 Census index at DurhamRecordsOnline in Auckland (parents ages differ)
RYAN
Peter 36 Ireland
Catherine 32 Ireland
Margaret 16 Ireland
William 13 Ireland
Peter 6 Auckland
Mary Ann 3 Auckland

Still struggling to find them in 1871 and 1881.

Helen

Thanks very much, firstly I never noticed that Thomas was born before the marriage date.  I have him as Thomas Liddle Ryan on the 81, so not sure if that is a link to his mother or not.  I will need to check on this one.

I did find them on the 81 census, but under BRAN instead.
Living at Calvert St, Crook and Billy Row.

Peter 28 born Bishop Auckland
Elizabeth 25 born Brandon, Cumberland (this is the one that is confusing me as I said before I can only find one marriage detail and that is for Elizabeth Hardy who I can only find being born in Auckland in 1856.

Thomas Liddle Ryan 9 born Crook
Margaret Ann 4 born Crook
Catherine 2 born Bedburn, Durham  ?? (I think error)
William 6 mths born Crook

I have Peter RAINE in 71 census living as a lodger in Crook and Billy Row living with a family called Sherwood.

His father Peter who was born in Ireland was in 71 a pauper in the workhouse age 65.  I think he died in 71 also.  Cant find his wife Catherine.

They were a strange lot.  I don't think any of them every knew how old they were.

I can't find my copy of the 91 census, could you please let me know the details.

Thanks very much

Angela
