Thanks AlanUK. Why do you think that mate. Is there something about it points in that direction? If so I am wondering why it was presented to a Returned Services League. More confusion. Ha!

I agree with Alan. There is nothing there suggestive of the Armed Services (apart from a cutlass). As previously mentioned, it also makes use of several conventional heraldic devices - martlet, trefoil, crescent, a chief embattled, etc. - that I have never seen on military shields/crests etc.
(1) Janions of Cheshire, Lancashire, Hawaii, Vancouver and Seattle.
(2) Gregorys of Tarporley, Cheshire.
(3) Pughs of 'The New Pale' near Frodsham and Delamere in Cheshire.
(4) Nevills of Llanelly, Llangennech and Felinfoel.
(5) Yaldens of Ovington/Lovington in Hampshire.

If you Google something like 'English schools crests on wooden shield' you should see some examples

I think it is not military because there is no insignia shown on the shield that matches any regiment in the British army.  The design of the shield is not one that matches the usual style seem on Army shields.

Maybe a souvenir type plague from a yacht or merchant ship, the sort of thing you would find on-board decorating a mess room or a bar in a yacht or sailing club.

There have been a few ships named 'Vigilanter'.
