Ada Holme or should that be Margery or Margaret?
« on: Thursday 31 August 23 09:05 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I've been tearing my hair out this morning, trying to work out exactly who Marcus Arthur Holme married!

Marcus was born 14 Sep 1881 in Wellingborough, Northants

Mar 1920 he married Ada Allcroft in Leeds
son Roy Allcroft Holme was born abt Jan 1921  Shrewsbury (died 28 July 1934)

1921 census Marcus, MARGERY and Roy Holme are living in St Chad Shropshire
Margery and son Roy are both listed as being born Shewsbury

they had 5 more children by 1939 all with the mothers maiden name Allcroft

1939 register Marcus, Margery (born 9 Aug 1898), son William and 4 others are living at 18 Buttivant Street Nottingham

Marcus died 16 Mar 1960 he is buried in the Carlton Cemetery Nottingham in the same plot as son Roy Allcroft Holme and MARGARET HOLME!  (Findagrave)

Margaret died 1 Aug 1956 aged 56

other than the marriage record, 1921 and 1939 I cannot find anything for Ada/Margery/Margaret Allcroft! That is if they are all the same woman. I cannot find a birth or death record for her.

Any suggestions welcome

Thanks in advance
Jenny

Do you have her father’s name and occupation from the marriage certificate?

You might find information in funeral notices in the newspapers. The 1939 register gives the date of his wife's birth, so you could look for it in the bmd index to see is she had middle names. Maybe she is Ada Margery, but prefers Margery.

Nothing in the newspapers.

Sorry Heywood, I don't have the marriage cert yet, I was hoping to find her first.

There is an Ada Allcroft born 1898 but she died as an infant

I have an Aunt Marge, whose birth name is Margaret, so I guess that Marge/Margery might be a diminutive of Margaret.

This is my best suggestion

1901 - Brynuchel, Cemmaes

Edward Allcroft    54    Head
Anne Allcroft      52    Wife
Ada Mary Riley    2    Visitor b Shrewsbury

She's with them again in 1911 in Dovey Bridge, Machynlleth - listed as niece

There's an Ada Mary Riley b 8 August 1898 (so one day out!) baptised in Shrewsbury. Mother also Ada

Plus an Ada Allcroft who enlists in the WRAF in 1918 in Grantham - b c1898, father Edward Malcolm Allcroft

The Ada Allcroft who enlists gives her father's address as being in Llanwrin - which is where the Edward who has Ada Riley in his household is living in 1921
