Hi
It's from the church register (image on ancestry).
In that part of the register at least quite a lot of father's first names have been abbreviated, and some are just an initial or initials.
Perhaps Jo was reduced to J on the copy the church sent to the GRO!

The partial image posted by jonw65 above is from the actual church register and so all the signatures of the parties are usually their original ones, but in this case they are not as they all made their mark, including the witnesses. This image is available on Ancestry as well.

If you have the marriage cert from the GRO then it will more than likely be in a different hand and the writing will all be the same.

So in answer to your question there are 2 records for this marriage, the one in the original parish register, and the one at the GRO.

Jo is usually an abbreviation of John. Have also seen it written sometimes as Jno.

There is a tree on Ancestry that has some links to census records and baptisms and marriages.

Ann HEATH is in Chobham in 1841 with her father William and her daughter Sarah aged 2mths. No sign of Richard.

Warwickshire in 1861, Richard born Dursley

Wootton St Mary, Gloucestershire in 1871. Richard born Dursley

Ann in Birmingham in 1881 a widow, living with son Samuel.

Baptism of Ann Mumford in Chobham image.

There is a link to a baptism of a Richard Heath at Dursley in 1821, parents Isaac and Elizabeth, which may be wrong.

Ian & Jon,

Thank you for clarifying all that for me.

Everyone,

I now think that Richard HEATH (bap Thornbury) is the wrong man! The census data you're reporting seems to be indicating that 'my' Richard was bap in Dursley, so I've been looking in the wrong place for his parents!  My thanks to all for your help, and also apologies to you all for having wasted your time. I shall now shift my search to GLS.

Are they missing from the 1851 census?
Possibly should still be in St. Pancras

They are in Wootton St. Mary in 1871, so this seems to be Richard's death
Dec 1874 Gloucester 6a 200
Heath, Richard
Age 59

There is a death announcement in the Gloucester Journal, 14 November 1874
From free ocr text I get
Heath—Nov. 7, 2, Alfred place, Wotton, Richard Heath, aged 59 years.

1861 image has Richard as age 39 the same age as Ann

ADDED 1871 he is 53, Ann is 50

And said to be 59 in November 1874, when he died, he was ageing more rapidly than he should have been!

I cannot find the family in '51 or '61.

In '51, they are not at Ann's parents' home in Chobham

Search using the son Henry born 1847 with parents Richard and Ann. Comes up straight away.

Should say this is for 1861. No sign of any of them in 1851 that I can see.
