Any record or information about George Crowley
« on: Saturday 02 September 23 00:53 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am researching George Crowley. He was born in about 1853, possibly in either Scotland or Ireland. From what I understand he was the eldest son of Cornelius and Catherine (Kate) Crowley - Catherine was born O'Bryan/O'Brian. What makes it uncertain is that it seems George was born 3 years before Cornelius and Catherine were married (m. May 12, 1856 Glasgow, Scotland). He also had siblings:
Cornelius Crowley (son) born 1856
Margaret Crowley (daughter) born 1858
Catherine Crowley (daughter) born 1859
Josiah (Joseph) Crowley (son) born 1861
Mary Crowley (daughter) born 1862

The family arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand on DEC 9, 1863 onboard the Brothers Pride. Up to that date George was still alive, listed as a passenger and had not been recorded as a death at sea. The ship was placed into quarantine nearby at a place called Camp Bay.

Interesting Joseph died in Christchurch May 18, 1864 - I wonder if it was connected to the illnesses that plagued the ship.

The family migrated to Australia soon after. They were recorded living at 51 Elizabeth St North, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on April 3, 1866.

If anybody can help me confirm if George was alive during the Crowley's stay in Australia that would be terrific.

Hi Ash,
As shown by the links you have pasted here regarding previous research into this ship, Camp Bay  and into the CROWLEY family, the research to date has been extensive.

You have also hunted for information of others  on the ship and at Camp Bay.

Possibly the helpers here will come up with something in Australia after a thorough reading of informtion already found. Here's hoping!

Thanks Sue - I hope there maybe a census of who of the family was at the address in 1866  :)

There is a record of a boy George CROWLEY, birthdate given as 1852, England, being convicted of larceny in Melbourne, 1866.  I find the record really hard to read but I think it mentions Cornelius (or may be Catherine) CROWLEY living at 51 Elizabeth St, Melbourne.

Perhaps someone with better eyesight and/or better skills of copy and paste from a document to here may be able to transcribe it!

I believe from what I have read that Cornelius, the father, had done some time in prison before coming out - so I guess like father, like son  ;)

In my reply#5 I mentioned some words deciphered.
Further attempts.

His native place is London.

>>>prison before. Father dead. Mother married again . Cornelius Crowley, a >>>and lives at 51>>>Melbourne >>>>>>and 2 others.

At provic you can search prison records and you will see others of the family, including one who uses his mother's maiden name as on of his aliases.

According to my deciphering and interpretation  ??? Cornelius is not the child's father. ;)

ADDING

There is a note on the file description for the document found by Judith.  It says held on hulk Deborah. This was one of several at Hobsons Bay.

I can see the words on the document at the bottom left.
28 days Deborah 1866.

This item is about the hulk Deborah.
