Mathias THATCHER Head, 24, Coffee House Keeper b Berkshire
Jessie wife, 28 born Staffordshire
Eveline daughter 1, born London

and a slew of Lodgers.

Checking the GRO reveals Jessie was nee BANNERMAN

in 1883 this family plus another child born 1882, Edwin Mattie (mmn BANERMAN)
emigrated to New Zealand

Another son was born there and a transcript of his birth registration I have seen says that

Jessie was born in Staffordshire (no more detail)
Jessie was nee BANNERMAN
Jessie was 31 (on 14th April 1887) so born apt 1856
Jessie & Mathias married February 1879, Marylebone, London

Jessie was the informant.

When she died in 1937 she was said to be 86. so born 1851

Can anyone see a birth or a marriage for Jessie?

Most Jessie Bannerman are appearing on census born Scotland.  There is one in Plymouth in 1861 but she dies in childhood.

Have you traced the one in 1871 age 19 born Scotland who is in Sacombe, Hertfordshire as a servant to the Smith family to see if she returned to Scotland.

Interestingly the Thatchers have Lodgers from Sutherlandshire in 1881
Possibly this marriage so probably does not help

I’ve been very tempted by that Jessie in Hertfordshire. But I haven’t been able to confidently rule her in or out.  It seems odd the Jessie we are looking for should say born staffs twice.

In 1872 a Thomas Bannerman had a daughter, Jessie Ellen Bannerman, in Blithfield, Staffs.  That Thomas was a gardener. He married Maria Burgess at Blithfield 1864.  Found them on census for 1871 and he was born in Scotland. Marriage cert says his father was Adam, a stone mason.   Thomas born c 1841. I got really excited. And then…. Found he did have a sister Jessie, but there is a bit of a confusion of Jessie Bannermen at the time, but I fear she may still be in Scotland in 1881 which would rule her out.

It does seem more reasonable that she was born Staffordshire if she remembered what she had said before

Ah, I hadn’t seen her (I’ve only just been introduced to this family. Jessie is my sister in laws 2x G. grandmother)

So that puts the lie to a marriage Feb 1879

Father named as John Thatcher! A Servant.
Mother is Jessie formerly Bannerman and she is the informant.

It is not so bad getting certs when they come so quickly and reasonably cheap  . So he is calling himself John

Do you have Jessie's death cert to see what is on there for her parentage.

Nothing on FreeBMD for a marriage anywhere for THATCHER and BANNERMAN. The only Jessie BANNERMAN marriage is in 1900, coincidentally in Staffordshire.

The Jessie in Plymouth in 1861 died in 1862. There was another Jessie born Plymouth in 1856 but she also died, the same year.

I haven’t seen the death certificate myself, but I am told it has nothing for the parents.
However I will check again.
