It is not so bad getting certs when they come so quickly and reasonably cheap  ;D. So he is calling himself John

Burial of Annie Elizabeth is on Ancestry 23rd May 1879 at Highclere - abode Highclere

Highclere isn’t far from Newbury/Inkpen which is where Mathias was born/baptised

Added…and his parents (Richard & Arabella) are at Blake Farm Highclere in 1881. 😀

So, I wonder why he was calling himself John

As Jessie was the informant on the birth she was the one giving the name of 'John'

9 lower Sloan street is the Sloan Club now.
I was wondering if Mathias was a servant perhaps his employer thought Mathias was too posh a name and called him John.

mckha489, you say in your opening post "Jessie & Mathias married February 1879, Marylebone, London"--do you have a ref for this marriage please?

I presumed that it was information given for this N.Z birth certificate  :-\

Another son was born there and a transcript of his birth registration I have seen says that

Jessie was born in Staffordshire (no more detail)
Jessie was nee BANNERMAN
Jessie was 31 (on 14th April 1887) so born apt 1856
Jessie & Mathias married February 1879, Marylebone, London

Jessie was the informant.

That is the problem
No marriage has been found, but she said on the N Z birth cert that they were married in February 1879, Marylebone

I have asked if the family have their death certs as they should both have a marriage date on too. Especially Mathias’s as Jessie would have been providing the information.
I suspect there is no marriage.

Scots Jessie Bannerman who could be the one in Hertfordshire in 1871 age 19. born Scotland.

1. born 1850 d of Adam, a Mason. Golspie, Sutherland.   Not her. She is in Scotland in 1871 & 1881

2. born 1852 d of John, a baker,  & Janet .  1861 they are at Crookston Street, Govan, Tradeston, Lanarkshire,  - this one cannot be seen (by me anyway) in Scotland in 1871. I cannot see a death that fits (I bought the 1862 cert just to check, and that is a 3 mth old).

3. She is not the 1868 marriage to Charles McGovern. (That Jessie was 21 at that marriage, daughter of Robert)

I cannot see the 1852 one in 1881.
If her father's name was John, that might explain why John is the name put down on the birth reg of Annie Elizabeth THATCHER.

But if it is her, why does she say she was born in Staffordshire????

UPDATE
the 1852 d of John is in Glasgow with her mother in 1871, but as Jennet.  and her death cert is on a tree. So rules her out completely

SO - I still don't have a contender for the Hertfordshire Jessie.

The names Janet/Jennet and Jessie were sometimes interchanged, particularly in Scotland, just as Jane and Jean were. Could have been done in England as well I suppose.

There seems to be no death for her in Scotland on SP, not as Jessie anyway (mother Matheson or Mathieson) Had an older sister Jane.

Where is she in 1871 and 1881?
1871 I can only see the one with the Polson grandparents in Golspie, may be the same one in 1881? I may be missing something!
