Deaths of William and Sarah Fletcher (Rufford/Mawdesley)
« on: Sunday 03 September 23 17:48 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the deaths/burials of this husband and wife.

They married in Croston on 25 July 1780 and their family was born between 1782 and 1803.  They lived between Rufford and Mawdesley, Lancashire.

I cannot for the life of me find their deaths.

A tree online has William being buried in 1822 in Somerset and Sarah "after" 1803 in Wiltshire.  Now they have no connection at all to Wiltshire or Somerset and all their kids settled in the North West of England.   I can find neither on the 1841 Census.

This tree also has a random son Stephen born in 1792 in Wiltshire whose parents are indeed William and Sarah but I don't believe they are 'my' William and Sarah.   It would have been very strange, I believe, that they have a daughter Jane in 1791 in Rufford, run off to Wiltshire to have another son Stephen in 1792, and then come back up to have twins William and John in 1793 in Rufford again.

Another tree has the family hiking over to the USA, via Scotland and then William dying in Somerset but again it looks like it is because its similar names.

So...I am very doubtful about the Somerset connection (even though the age could be correct for William who was born about 1760) and I can discount the USA.

Any hints or resolutions gratefully received!  :)

If they needed help in their old age they likely went to the oldest daughter.
Then again Mary 1801 and Sally 1803 might be the better candidates.

Where are they 1841?.

Their son William was buried on 1 January 1802 at St Mary the Virgin Rufford aged 8 years.the family abode was given as Mawdesley.

There’s a Mary Fletcher buried 17 July 1796 daughter of William of Mawdesley husbandman.

Perhaps Daniel was not expected to live as he was baptised 2 days after birth. Then baptised in the home church when he did actually survive

The eldest child Jane (later Cropper - albeit on the 41 transcribed as Crapper) was living in Ormskirk with Mum and Dad weren't with her.  Mary (named after a deceased older sister) and Sally were the only other girls and I can't find either of them marrying, dying or anything. Those two youngest girls have gone AWOL unfortunately.

Yes I spotted that one too - I thought maybe they had forgotten but the two dates are quite close! Maybe the explanation that they felt he was not going to live was the reason for him being 'done' twice

Thank you!

That looks like a good option for them.  The age for William matches, although Sarah would have been about 76 not 80  ;D. Off the top of my head I think one (possibly two) of their sons ended up in Wigan....I think it might be the twin John and elder brother George. Where did you find that information?
