Marriage between Thomas Kingsland and Sarah Richardson
« on: Monday 04 September 23 14:24 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm trying to locate a marriage between Thomas Kingsland (born1782 Buxted Sussex) and Sarah Richardson (1783)

My husband has this Sarah as Thomas' wife and the Census returns show his wife as a Sarah. His son Thomas' baptism also has the mother as Sarah. However I cannot find a marriage to confirm that it was this Sarah that he married. Provided all children were legitimate the marriage would have occurred prior to 1806 when the first child was born.

I can find a marriage in Buxted for a Sarah Richardson in 1802 but the spouse is not Thomas. Could't find a marriage for Thomas either.

Thank you for any help , I shall keep digging

Sarah says she was born Chailey Sussex, I don't see the parish records online.

You would expect her to marry in her native parish.

There is a Sarah Richardson born Keymer 1780 but it looks like she marries John Float 1806 Keymer

That's what you would expect. I've trawled through Ancestry and FindMyPast and can't find a marriage at all for Thomas. So I decided to search from Sarah's perspective but nothing shows up apart from the one in Buxted but is wrong spouse. She seems to marry again later but once again not to Thomas.

Thomas is the eldest son born 1808 and he is baptised on 17th April 1808 with parents Thomas and Sarah Kingsland. Baptism takes place in Maresfield, Sussex. Would they have been allowed to baptise Thomas if they weren't married? I don't think they would, would they?

If the parish clerk at Maresfield was unaware then yes they would be able to.

It's only 2 plus miles between the villages however why baptize in Maresfield the entries abode Buxted

It doesn't seem far enough away for any gossip not to spread!

First 7 children were born Maresfield, remaining children were Buxted. First child born Buxted was in 1820. So looks like they moved there sometime between 1819 and 1820. Their address from the 1841 Census onwards id Red Brook, in the parish of Buxted.

Can I confirm how you know Sarah's maiden name of Richardson? Her children were born before civil registration, and you don't have a marriage.

I don't....I'm just going back over my husband's side of the tree, checking facts and trying to find documents to confirm those facts...it hasn't always been accurate! He has that Thomas married a Sarah Richardson. I can only assume that this has been copied from somebody else's tree . I know he married somebody called Sarah due to information on his 3xgreat grandfathers baptism entry and also from 4 Census returns.  Did he marry Sarah Richardson or another Sarah and thats what I'm trying to establish.
