If he and Bertha married 1883 then he would be 23 years old, unlikely to have been previously married.

They don't appear to be in the New York state marriage index, but that only started in 1881 and compliance wasn't great in the early years.  It's also possible that they married in another state.

In the 1930 census, William is listed as widowed. He states he was 22 at age of first marriage. That would make that marriage about 1882.

1930 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XM57-RHH

Also, a tree at Family Search has his middle name as Edward?

In the 1920 census, William is listed as married, but I don't see Eva Bertha listed? Finding out when she died and her death record may give her maiden name?

I thought this might be him with his surname mistranscribed and listed as widowed in the 1910 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M545-6T1

To amondg, shellyesq ans rj137
Thanks for your input into the Eva Bertha issue my laptop decided to go sleep for a few days and I was not able to respond.
The info provided and further checks it appears that it is Bertha Eva but I still think Eva is the middle name and so far not found a maiden name all other info good
I have just doing another post that cropped up when researching above

Death certificates in the USA have the parents names to include if known the mother's maiden name.

So if you know or can find out the deaths of children Leon 1884- ?, Lester 1888- ? Amended he chose Charles Lester or Earl E 1890 - ?then fingers crossed they will have her maiden name.
