John Anderson born 1831ish Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 12:04 BST (UK) »
Firstly, apologies for the long post, but I want to provide some background.

I am hoping for some help to track down John Anderson’s family. What I know is as follows:

John Anderson was born about b 1831/32 Camlachie Glasgow.

He married Margaret Smith 7th June 1853 Glasgow.

Occupation is Bricklayer.

From SP I have his 1853 marriage and the 1855 birth certifcate of daughter Jean, where he says he and Margaret married in 1852. I haven’t found the birth or baptism of an older daughter, Janette, born around 1853.

John, Margaret and their two daughters emigrated to Australia in 1857.

I found a family in the 1851 and 1841 Scottish censuses which looks promising. I would appreciate second opinions on these, or any alternative suggestions:
1851 census:
Annfield Cottage, Glasgow (St John)
John Anderson age 38 labourer born Glasgow
Janet wife age 41 b Glasgow
John son 19 Bricklayer (!) b Glasgow (= Margaret Smith)
Janet 15
Mary 13
Robert 11
James 6
William 11 months
Elizabeth Anderson 68 mother b Auchterarder Fifeshire
Mary McLean 27 lodger

This is the only John I could find of the right age with the right occupation. If it is the correct family, it is a bonus to have his grandmother in the household.

I think this might be the same family in 1841:
Address is simply Glen (?)
John Anderson 30 Brick Moulder
Janet 30 Brick Dyker
John 10 Brick Moiner
Janet 5
Robert 2
All are born Lanarkshire

Daughter Mary is missing from the 1841 and occupations are odd due to Ancestry’s transcriptions, but are brick related and tally with the 1851 census.

With common names and most of the children probably having left home or married, making identifying them difficult, I haven’t managed to find any if them for certain on the 1871 census. It may be that the whole family emigrated. I have had a look on some of the Australian immigration indexes but couldn’t find them emigrating together as a family. This may be a search for another time, but just mentioned in case anyone can find them in Scotland, or if not, that may be the reason.

I’ve been trying to find the grandmother Elizabeth Anderson bc 1783 in the 1841 census i  the hope that she is with her husband. Without knowing his name I can’t think of a way to identify their marriage.

I can’t narrow down a marriage for John Anderson bc 1813 and Janet either, though I’m not sure that would contain any useful information, but I would still like to find the marriage.

Any assistance with filling in any of the above gaps would be most appreciated.

Though unrelated to this request, I do have an old (long) thread from 2015 on associated families, and can post a link if required.

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

There is an Elizabeth Anderson, age 60, with a Robert Anderson, a Tailor, age 30, & a child, Margaret, age 9, living in Outer High or St Pauls Parish, Glasgow. Can't quite make out the address.

Added: The address may be Greyfriars Wynd,

Hi Ruskie  :)

See that John and Margaret's first born was called Janet Black Anderson (?from family trees).

How about this marriage for John's parents, John and Janet?

JOHN ANDERSON &
JANET BLACK
24/10/1830
644 / 1
410 / 192
Glasgow

Thanks Monica. Yesterday when looking for marriages for John and Janet around 1830, I did make note of that as ‘one to look at’.

Are you able to post a link to the family trees which featured Janet with the middle name Black? I can’t find her on SP.

Thanks again. You have given me more to explore.  :)

I can’t find any of the children of John and Janet Anderson from the 1851 census above.

You might expect William to be the easiest to find as he was 11 months old on the 1851 census so must have been born in 1850, but I can’t find him. I am hoping that Janet’s maiden name is noted on at least one of the children’s births, so I can cross check with the John Anderson/Janet Black marriage.

Can anyone spot any of these children please?  :-\

No Ruskie, I could not find baptisms for any of them either.
I also spent quite some time going back and forth and in circles trying to find other ways of working out Janet's maiden name. But no real success, I'm sorry.
Anything noted on any of the Australian records?
