Can anyone spot any of these children please?  :-\

No Ruskie, I could not find baptisms for any of them either.
I also spent quite some time going back and forth and in circles trying to find other ways of working out Janet's maiden name. But no real success, I'm sorry.
Anything noted on any of the Australian records?

Thanks so much for trying Neale. Glad to know I’m not missing something obvious. I’ll have another look to see if I can find anything in Australian records.

Thanks for those links Monica. Unfortunately the Vic BMD site is down at the moment - I will try again later. It looks like none of us have found much in the way of Anderson information beyond John b1813.  :-\

Since other trees say that John Anderson married Janet Black I purchased the image of the marriage from SP which reads:

24th October 1830
John Anderson. Baker in Glasgow
& Janet Black residing there

Not very enlightening as expected, but I’m not convinced this is the right couple. Unless “Baker” is meant to be ”Brickmaker”?

That’s true Monica. It’s a tricky old search this one.  ;)

"1855 birth certificate of daughter Jean"

Does the certificate give birthplace for mother and father?

Does it record previous issue?

"John, Margaret and their two daughters emigrated to Australia in 1857."

Where did they arrive...what ship?

Thanks for your interest Wivenhoe.

The family arrived Melbourne 5 Aug 1857
“Star of the South”
John Anderson 25
Margaret 22
Janette 4
Jean 1

From Jean’s b/c:
Born Dec 7th 1855 - 27 Claythorn St Glasgow
John age 24 birthplace Camlachie Bricklayer (jour)
Margaret maiden surname Smith 20 birthplace Ferguslie Paisley
her second child - one girl living
John recoreded the birth and said that he and Margaret married in 1852 in Glasgow. (but they actually married 7th June 1853)

I have Margaret’s parents as Robert Smith and Jean McLaren.
I can’t find any record of the birth of Janette who supposedly has the middle name “Black”.
Australian Vic death index gives John’s mother’s name as Janet Black, but unusually, give no father’s name.

Added: I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before, but I haven’t yet looked for a birth for Janette with the surname Smith, which I will do now.

Here is a link to my previous thread, mainly related to side shoots and later generations of associated families. It is a long and winding thread, and not essential reading I don’t think:

The only additional thing I found which is of interest, but no help, is mention in the Valuation rolls 1855:
John Anderson, labourer, tenant living at 27 Claythorn Street Glasgow - the address on birth cert of daur Jean b 1855. Looks like a tenement with 8 names/families as tenants at the same address.

Hi Ruskie,

That would be correct as the accommodations were classed as a 'room & kitchen', very basic living space with an outside shared toilet much of the time.

Re "Elizabeth Anderson 68 mother b Auchterarder Fifeshire"...

Even from the transcription Neale provided it's difficult to determine what's correct...

It could have been either Auchterarder, Perthshire (which it was/is) or Auchterderran, Fifeshire (which it was/is)?  ::)  ;D

It may have been easier to determine which was correct had the family been living in either at the time of the 1851 census although it may not have been conclusive  ???

Rusky...

Re 1841..."Address is simply Glen (?)"

Which parish was this & is 'Glen' the home address?

I can only come up with 2 places with 'Glen' in them, Cowglen & Toryglen which are place names rather than an address.

What are the other addresses on the same page/prior?
