Timothy Clarkson - varying ages struggling to trace him
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 21:40 BST (UK) »
Timothy has been one ancestor I've come back to many times and can not get past him. So I'd thought I'd ask for some help/advice.

1807 - Timothy Clarkson married Mary Jones in Stapleton, they were both of that parish. Witnesses are Ann and Richard Blaney

1841 - Leebotwood, Timothy, Ag Lab, aged 55, born out of county
Mary, aged 50, born in county

1851- Leebotwood, Timothy, Ag Lab, aged 80? (mark through age), not known birthplace
Mary, aged 73, clungunford

1853 - Timothy dies Leebotwood aged 87.

1860 - Mary dies Condover aged 86 (newspaper confirmed widow of late Timothy Clarkson of Leebotwood)

So for Timothy I have the following possible birth years , 1786,1771,1766 with no known birth place. Is there anyway of tracing him back, or will he forever be my brick wall?

Thank you to anyone willing to have a look see for me :)

Have you found the children born to Timothy and Mary?

Often (but not always) the eldest son is named after the father's father. It's a vague hope!!

Also, Timothy is not that common a name as opposed to John, William, Thomas etc. It may be a name which came down through the family - might it be worth searching further back for a possible location?
Desperate measures and all that!!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

1841 has another Timothy with them age 25 baptised 26 Jun 1814.

There's a Jemima baptised 29 Mar 1808 - appreciate you may already have these children.

Hi,
I've checked the children of Timothy and Mary through the censuses, I found no clues unfortunately.
I've found christenings of two families that could be the siblings of Timothy, in Oswestry and Bridgnorth, but couldn't find a Timothy among them.

Oh! What a tangled web we perceive,
where ancestors try to hide and deceive.

Katie, you may already know this but it is something I only learned very recently on a FB group.

It may not be totally applicable in this case but in the 1841 census almost all ages above the age of 20 were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 10 years. It sounds unlikely but just check a page and you will see that almost every adult's age ends in a 0 or a 5. So someone aged 54 would appear as 50 and someone aged 59 would appear as 55.

Not everyone knew their exact age in 1841 so someone aged say 57 but guessing their age as 54 could appear in the census as aged 50, 7 years younger than they really were. Just something to be aware of with differences in census ages.
