JOSHUA PASFIELD/PASSFIELD
« on: Wednesday 06 September 23 04:14 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I did research on the above back in 2015 and I would like to make another enquiry please.

JOSHUA  PASFIELD
B: Great Bardsfield Essex England b 1825
Bapt: 29.10.1826 Base child of MARTHA PASFIELD
D: APRIL 01 1879 ALBERGLASSLYN (Near Maitland NSW (HAVE OBIT) Australia
M: MARY BASSETT Born 1848 Essex England

I have this record which was kindly sent to me but I would actually like to see the entry if possible!
To expand on the marriage entry:

It is #78 in the register of Great Bardfield, Joshua is 22, single and where the fathers name would appear it says Illegitimate.
Mary Bassett is 21 and daughter of James Bassett
Witnesses are James Bassett (signs) and Elizabeth Gosett/Gowett.

Joshua and Mary Ann Bassett came to NSW as immigrants March 1851.  There daughter Martha apparently died on the voyage!

Mary Bassett was baptized at Finchingfield Essex 14 March 1830 as Marianne Bassett daughter of James and Lucy Bassett.

Any help finding the marriage certificate with the "illegitimate" entry would be great to see thank you.  Kindest regards Dianna

A voyage with much sickness

The shipping record states information about Joshua's father.

Marriage Certificate can be ordered from GRO - https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp.

Reference:
Year - 1848
December Quarter
Registration District - Dunmow
Volume - 12
Page - 149

It isn't possible to "see" a Marriage Certificate. You have to buy a copy.

Hi Thanks for the replies with the shipping record where his father is recorded we think this is just a little "fib" perhaps to cover up.

So with this I was told:-

It is #78 in the register of Great Bardfield, Joshua is 22, single and where the fathers name would appear it says Illegitimate.
Mary Bassett is 21 and daughter of James Bassett
Witnesses are James Bassett (signs) and Elizabeth Gosett/Gowett.

Would this mean that the person who has sent me this information has "seen" it??  Would seem so, they were quite specific!

Anyway I will make enquires in Bardfield then, I just assumed that this marriage record could be seen.

Thanks for your time.  Regards Dianna

As they married in Church you can also ask the Essex Record Office for a photo copy of the parish registers.

Located in Chelmsford, the website has a contact us button, a copy of the parish register may be less expensive that a GRO copy.

Hi Sue thanks for the clip in the newspaper!  No wonder Martha Passfield died.  So sad.  Now I should not ask but I wonder what they did with the bodies.  I think I know.  How awful.  Regards Dianna

It was the usual practice when there was death at sea that the body would be"comitted to the sea"

There was a religious ceremony performed with due dignity.
The death of children is always awful, but whether the process of disposal was awful or not is a matter of opinion. There was a matter of necessity to be considered.

The exception to this might be if the ship was within hours of harbour,

A bastardy bond may survive for the parish which may give a potential father for Joshua Passfield born c1825. But if not, DNA testing may reveal a father if you are willing to do an ancestry DNA test.

On a side note, Great Bardfield is a village where I have ancestors from. I am sure I have come across Passfields in my blanket searches in registers but not yet linked to my tree yet.
