Manchester records know this may be a long shot but
« on: Wednesday 06 September 23 10:14 BST (UK) »
I know this may be a long shot but thought I would try.
My GG Grandmother was Bridget Maher (variations of spelling maybe Meagher etc).  She was born in Waterford, Ireland. She was married to my William Simpson. I don't need any info on her as I have that but she wrote a letter to the Manchester Guardian newspaper on 4th August 1856 ( I was sent this information by Rosie on this dite) asking for help finding any information on her Mother, Margaret Maher formerly Walsh or Welsh who she said were there in 1847. She said that her sisters, Ann, Catherine & Mary (could be Mariam) were also there. Ann and Catherine worked in a factory and Mary was a dressmaker.
Just asking if there is any way or who I can ask for information
Many thanks in advance

Hi
I have found another family that have a lot of coincidences with the family you describe.
In Liverpool in 1851, and going between areas of Manchester and Liverpool in future census records.
In 1861 in Oldham the family is Thomas and Bridget Maher, They have four visitors with the surname Wellsh. Occupation is given as factory operatives cotton.
Any link to the family you are looking for or ?

Just adding the newspaper article I posted on your other thread in case it helps here  :)

Morning Chronicle 04 August 1856
Relatives Wanted
We are requested (says the Manchester Guardian) by Bridget Simpson the widow of one of our brave soldiers killed at the battle of the Alma who writes to us from Scotland, to assist her, if possible, in finding the address of her mother and sisters, who resided in Manchester in the year 1847, and whom she believes to be still here. We have very great pleasure complying with her request. She states that her husband was a Sergeant in the Rifle Brigade. that her mothers name was Margaret Maher and that she had three sisters Ann, Catherine and Mary, the two former of whom worked in a factory and the third was a dressmaker. The present address of our correspondent is 'Hopeman by Elgin, Morayshire' and we shall be glad to forward to her any information that may be communicated to us.

Hi Glenclare
Many thanks for this information.  It's feasible that the family might be related.  Maybe Thomas was an Uncle.  I'll look into it further to check if there is a connection

What was Bridget’s father’s name?
Have you got approximate years of birth for her sisters?
Were they born in Ireland? If so - where?

Hello Heywood
Bridget's Father's name was John Maher.
I don't have exact dates of birth apart from Mariam / Mary, who was baptised on November 1819 in Waterford.   Bridget was also born in 1813 in Waterford.  The years range from 1813 to 1825.
I think there is another sister called Ellen
That's all the information I have
