Have found the marriage of Samuel Maxwell (son of John Maxwell & Jane Wray) to Elizabeth McGowan on 25 Nov 1898 - he was residing 19 Temple Place, New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton where the marriage took place. Father listed as deceased but his mother still alive.

Looking now for the deaths of John Maxwell (died between 1891-1897) & his wife Jane (Wray) Maxwell (died after 1898)

Thankyou for that -

That just leaves John Maxwell to find.

There are 2 possible deaths in Lanark in 1892 & 1896 but the family were in Renfrew in 1891.  Nothing in Renfrew 1891-1898

Finally found the death of John Maxwell

Recorded New Kirkpatrick, Dunbartonshire 28 Nov 1892 aged 60 years - the informant was a son Joseph Maxwell.

John Maxwell road labourer married to Jane Ray
Parents John Maxwell farmer deceased & Sarah Maxwell formerly Torry, deceased

Joseph provided the wrong information as John Maxwell's father was a Samuel Maxwell according to his marriage certificate in Ireland.

Note - Joseph Maxwell is a son I was not aware of in this family - so I am going to try to locate him as well

But Matilda said her father was deceased when she married in 1898?  The John above was b 1842 & Jane died in Lanark in 1905

I think you have the wrong death

Well spotted a typo - I have corrected the date to 1892

Joseph Maxwell 1904-1976 was the son of Samuel Maxwell and Elizabeth McGowan.

He married my relative, Margaret Kerr in Scotstoun 1925 and were divorced in 1949.
(Margaret's father was the older, half brother of my great grandfather)

Although Margaret was born in Old Kilpatrick in 1901 to Irish parents, and appears on the 1901 census with her family, I think a few researchers got her information incorrect.

She and her family had moved back to their hometown in Ireland  by 1905.
Her parents both died before 1911 and she was boarded out with an older couple in her parents hometown.

At some point, in the early 1920's Margaret and her older brother are known to have moved back to Scotland which is how she came to marry Joseph Maxwell.

Thanks Anne for that information - very helpful

Do you know if Joseph & Margaret had any children?
