Update on this research, for those of you following this, is the wife , Gertrude Stertz nee Alzheimer had a Jewish mother. I have managed to find an article about the history of the family home which was commissioned by Dr Alzheimer in Wessling and later lived in by the Sturtz family. It appears from this article that after Hildegard Sonntag was widowed she married a Dr W. Koeppen and had several children.
I found a funeral notice for her ( she died in 2011 at the grand age of 93) which mentions Sonntag family, so I am hoping to reconnect with this lost branch of my family.

Another update as my sleuthing has eventually paid off and I am in touch with a son- in- law (who is actually French!) and who has sent me a photo of Hildegard Stertz and Kurt Sonntag.
