There are only two Frederick Johns registered in West Derby (for Aintree) in June 1914 - looks like both accounted for.
None in March, a few only in September

Thank you Jon and Toby for your input.
I think the 1934 death is him since his parents are listed at the same address in Birmingham in the 1921 census.
Just why his birth cannot be nailed down is a mystery.
