His sister Dora Ellen (registered as Ellen Dora) 1900 married Edwin Ira Throning 7 April 1920

Dora E died 25 May 1959 Wallasey Cheshire per probate index. Her will might prove useful.

From 1939 register she had two sons
Leslie Arthur Ernest Thorning 12 January 1922 he died 1999 Cheshire. he married 1950 (will send pm as I cannot find her death.

Vivyan Henry Ira Thorning 15 May 1927 he died 2016 - he married Elsie Humphries 1949 she died 6 February 2005 Cheshire and is buried in a family Grave (Humphrey's family) at Rake Lake Cemetery. Ref: Find A Grave.

His mother died 5 February 1959 buried Rake Lake Cemetery - Ellen Mary Vivyan, daughter Dora Thorning her husband (Dora's) Capt. E T Thorning and Leslie Thorning and Vivyan Thorning are listed on the same headstone. ref: Find A Grave.

If either of his sister Dora sons had children they might be interested.

Thank you for taking the trouble to do that, amondg. The information you found is spot on, except that Vivyan and Elsie had their ashes scattered by request, so are commemorated on the family headstones but not buried there. They were my parents. It seems that my cousin and I (offspring of Dora's sons) are probably the closest living relatives of Ernest, if he didn't have children, which answers my original query. Thanks again.

When I checked for children I assumed their mmn would be GUNTER but if Lilian was older she may have been married before. Has anyone seen her 1925 marriage certificate?
Might explain why it seems so hard to find any trace of her before the 1925 marriage.
BTW if the 1939 register I found was the mother of Ernest and Dora then the young Lilian with her is probably a niece.

Ellen Mary Vivyan was the mother of Ernest and Dora. I haven't gone into siblings and other relationships in much depth, so it's quite possible that the Lilian mentioned is a relative, not Ernest's wife. Thanks.

Do you have the 1925 marriage cert?  Who was Lilian's father & what was his occupation?

Thanks for the link to the marriage certificate, Comberton. CaroleW, Lilian's father was listed as 'John Gunter, deceased, Artizan' (loving that 'z' - sounds like a folk rock band!) Now that it seems clear there were no children of the marriage, that pretty much concludes my investigation.  I wanted to find out if there was any closer family member who would like his naval records, but it seems not. Thanks to all who have responded to this query - you're all stars!
