Great Grandfather George Smith 19c Scotland
« on: Sunday 10 September 23 08:29 BST (UK) »
The is the only (sorry very grainy) photo we have of my Great Grandfather George Smith and it would be fascinating to see what restoration may be possible.

Born on a croft near Grantown on Spey about 1848 he died in 1914, and is buried in Spynie Churchyard between Elgin and Lossiemouth, Morayshire.

From 1872 until 1884 he was a trooper in the Royal Scots Greys, and his Army record confirms he had black hair, hazel eyes and a ‘fresh’ complexion.

We know from census information he spoke both English and Gaelic so sealbh oirbh!

Very much looking forward to seeing everyone’s versions.

I’ll send separately a photo of Elsie Cumming his wife, and waiting for a moderator to approve a previous submission which we think is a photo of James (Jimmy) Smith one of his sons.

Thank you!

Sorry George’s Army record states his complexion was ‘fair’ not ‘fresh’! Looking forward to seeing what everyone makes of that!
Thanks again

Thank you so much Loord74, your restoration of the photo is outstanding and I have been marvelling at the detail, very much appreciated.

I know I am quite late to the table on this one - but I had it sitting around on HD so I thought I would take a stab at some colorization. Also.. who could beat Lord's go? Some great ones here.

I generally do not not like to implement great amounts of AI, as I somehow think that I am perhaps veering away from the original character and resemblance. I also do not have access to some of the greater (better) AI filters or online enhancement tools that are out there. Others also have a greater command of their usage.

Anyway.. it was fun to add some color here.

Thank you very much jmagarac for your superb interpretations.

The colours you’ve used beautifully match his description in a record from 1872 in the Royal Scots Greys Museum archive at Edinburgh Castle which I was privileged to see - he’s described as having black hair, hazel eyes & fair complexion.

Again thank you so much for taking the time.

On that great note I’m going to call it a wrap!
