ID a Photograph
« on: Sunday 10 September 23 16:26 BST (UK) »
A friend who is in his mid 90’s has four beautiful Victorian miniature paintings, one of which had some writing on the back of the original frame which might help to identify the family. If he can do so he would be happy to reunite the descendants with the miniatures. I attach the one with the writing on the reverse, which is only partially legible and reads “John xxxxxx” then what looks like “cc 47 yrs Dumfriesshire”
Its a long shot but if anyone recognises this man perhaps he / she could get in touch.

It might be an idea to post an image of the writing - some clever people on here are very good at deciphering hard to read writing. Maybe on the Handwriting Deciphering Board

Thanks, Maddys52,
That’s a good idea. I’ve tried to get a decent photo of the old wooden back of the original frame but haven’t yet succeeded. I’ll not see my friend until Friday and will try again then with a proper camera and lighting. I wasn’t aware of the handwriting deciphering section, thank you.

I should add, Maddys52, that it’s not really the quality of the handwriting, more the deterioration of the wooden plate.

Photo is quite small and blurry when zoomed in. I think more information is needed in order to get any help and identify the man.

I agree that a good clear photo of any writing is the best way forward.

Thanks, Ruskin, I agree it’s not a great photo, best I could get at the time. I’ll have another go on Friday. Appreciate your comments.
