Obscure Welsh name
« on: Sunday 10 September 23 18:59 BST (UK) »
I have been researching a family with the surname Ninnis who lived in Glamorgan - an unusal enough surname as it is. However, I have found a marriage entry for a Cadnass Ann Ninnis, a Welsh name I've not come across before. She was baptised simply as Ann Ninnis, and appeared so on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The marriage entry can be found here:

Is Cadnass a traditional Welsh name? Is it a misspelt version of another name? If it's not traditional, where does it come from?

Segar & Cadnass - makes a change from John & Mary😂

I see she signed the 1914 marriage cert as Cadnass Ann

I've not come across it before ~

Cadi and Caris/Carys are the only names that I know of that are close to it:
~

Here she is on the baptism record of one of their children:

1954 Electoral register for Goitre Coed Rd shows her as  Cadnas A Blackburn

She is in Glamorgan in 1939 but Segar is in Monmouth.  Originally transcribed as Cadens but a correction was notified in 2021

Did wonder if it was based on "Cadnoes" or "Cadnawes" ie. a female fox.
