There is a passenger list for the German Empire with Martin (23), Valeriya (22) and Stanislaw (1/2) SZYMCZAK departing Hamburg 21 March 1890, destination - New York. He says he is from Wszelczin. (on Ancestry)

From his death certificate, his date of birth is 12 November 1866. There is a Naturalisation for a Martin SZYMCHAK whose birth date is 12 November 1868, however the date is 12 January 1915. (I note that he says on the 1910 census he is already naturalised.)  :-\

Modified to strike through, wrong Martin. This one is married to Lena and arrived 1872.

I can see the index for naturalisation of a Martin SZYMCZAK on 12 October 1896  (certificate no. 3330) at Illinois.

German Empire, Hamburg, Germany, departure date 21 March 1890.  Arrival place “West Hartlepool (Nordamerika via Liverpool)”

Martin Szymczak, age 23 (born c1867)
Residence: Wszelczin, Posen
Occupation: Arbeiter
Destination: New York
Shipping Clerk: C. Wulkow
Ship Type: Dampfschiff
Ship Flag: England
Accommodation: “ohne Angabe”
Volume: 373-7 I - VIII B 1 Band 082

Written under Martin’s name (actually after his wife’s and child’s names) was a
Michael Wilgos, age 30
Residence: Alt Wszelczin, Posen
Occupation: Arbeiter
Destination: New York

Passenger and Index Lists
Michl Wilgos, age 30
Arrival: 1890, Boston
A source bibliography was noted but I didn’t see any indication of the ship name, list of passengers, or further details.

Could Mr. Wilgos have been travelling with the Szymczaks on the German Empire or were his details just a coincidence.  :-\

Added:  Mr. Wilgos sailed on the Lake Superior, checking the passenger list now.

Lake Superior
Arrival Date: 10 April 1890
Arrival Place: Boston, Massachusetts

Did your family disembark in New York possibly?  I didn’t see them, but I didn’t check twice.  :-\

It is possible they disembarked in New York, because they have a son John S Szymzcak born in Rochester in 1895. They moved to Chicago by 1910.
