You've been slightly unlucky with James and Sarah's marriage happening a year before the introduction of civil registration for Catholic marriages in 1864, for at least you might otherwise have stood some chance of learning the father's names.

The first actual address I can see for the couple (there's no indication in the marriage) is the townland of Drummuck, where son James was born in 1864 and which borders Moyagall to the north. Of course, there's no guarantee that James Magee and Sarah McShane were even from that general area originally. And even assuming they were, you are up against quite a challenge with these folk, for the reality is that the names Magee/McGee and McShane were thick on the ground in this and the wider area, as you can see from the following household schedules in what remains of the 1831 census, just for the parish of Maghera alone (there are several McGee households in Moyagall for example):

McShane: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01snm/

BTW, you didn't mention this, so in case you didn't know about it, when James and Sarah had a daughter Mary at Moyagall in 1865, the informant was recorded as 'Biddy Henry Grandmother':

I don't think I am going to make much of a dent into my paternal line.

Many thanks for the information. I will have a look and hopefully make some progress
